With Simmba, Rohit Shetty officially introduces his cinematic universe of super heroes or I must say Super Policemen. This universe has now two super policemen Sigham and Simmba. Let me share a secret, wait for the pre credit song scene and you will get a glimpse of the third super policeman, who will be introduced in 2019. Just like any Marvel super hero origin movie , Simmba is also one origin movie and has all the ingredients in balanced proportions.
Simmba is a typical Rohit Shetty film , bright visuals , animated characters , flying cars and danceable music. As I mentioned earlier it's an origin story so Simmba is about ACP Sangram AKA Simmba played by Ranveer Singh and his journey from a corrupt police officer to an honest cop while taking down the biggest baddie of town. First half is bland but crisp, what keeps you going is the delight full presence of Ranveer Singh. But every moment of second half is packed with action and drama, in short entertainment.
Highlight of the movie is Ranveer Singh's portrayal of Simmba, we usually believe that there is very little margin for acting in a typical masala entertainer but Ranveer Singh will prove you wrong here. His performance here has the intensity and conviction to match his earlier Bhansali spectaculars and equally deserve awards this year. Sara Ali Khan has nothing much to do here and is rather forgetful. Aushotosh Rana is great as the voice of consciousness and Sonu Sood with his towering self makes the perfect rival. Action sequences are choreographed well and the one with Ajay Devgan and Ranveer Singh together against Sonu Sood is the prime form of Bollywood action which shouldn't be missed.
This film also has an important message with in and portrays it in its entirety. You get to experience/feel the pain and sense the importance of the subject in an unforgettable way. Overall a very balanced entertainer. The only flaw of the movie is that it takes too long to set the scene in first half and this part lacks the required humor and lightness that's usually there in a Rohit Shetty production. Apart from that every other department is top notch including direction.
I believe this cinematic universe concept with different policeman is an interesting concept. I really hope Rohit Shetty builds on it and we get to see our very first desi Avengers Infinity War at some point, I go with 3.5 stars.
