April - Playlist

By Hamza Shafique (Instagram / Facebook)

April is going to be another exciting month for Movie fans especially for those who are into larger than life visual experience. We have many interesting releases but there are 4 major releases of my interest from the three industries that I follow.
Month will start with Shazam (from Hollywood) and Project Ghazi (from Lollywood) followed by mid-month mega release of Kalank (from Bollywood) and finally month closing with magnum opus Avengers-Endgame.

Shazam (PG15)

Release Date: 04 April 2019
Starring: Asher Angel, Cooper Andrews, Grace Fulton, Ian Chen, Jack Dylan Grazer, Zachary Levi
Language: English

DC has recently moved to the lighter side of comic book movies like Marvel and has finally given us decent entertainers like Wonder Woman, Justice League and Aqua man, so I have no doubt that this one will be any different. DC always had better comic book characters than Marvel, but they always lacked the right visual representations but now as that is fixed, I am super excited for Shazam. The key USP of Shazam is that this super hero is mentally a 14-year-old, so it will be fun to see how a 14-year-old mind with body/strength of superman reacts to typical super heroic situations and entertains us on screen. I am expecting a light-hearted storyline with bright visuals and funny yet engaging action sequences.

Project Ghazi (PG 13)

Release Date: 04 April 2019
Starring: Syra Shehroz, Sheheryar Munawar, Humayun Saeed
Language: Urdu

Project Ghazi as evident from the trailer would be Pakistan’s very first super hero film. This movie was delayed from original release as the makers realized more work is required to make this project technically sound, so I believe this will be technically a superior film considering the amount of time and money being invested. From trailers this movie had very Captain America sort of vibe from storyline perspective (super soldiers with enhanced strength and intelligence because of some military experiments – sounds familiar right), appears visually stunning and seems to have mature action sequences. I have high hopes from this one.

Kalank (TBC)

Release Date: 17 April 2019
Starring: Aditya Roy Kapur, Alia Bhatt, Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha, Varun Dhawan
Language: Hindi

Set in 1945, in Pre-Independence India, Kalank is Karan Johar’s try at Sanjay Leela Bhansali form of storytelling, with elaborate set designs, expensive cast, traditional music/dances and classic visual presentation. From the trailers and songs released there are a lot of hits and misses for me but overall, I am still excited for this venture. It will be nice to see Madhuri finally in a production suited to her stature and her being back on screen with Sanjay Dutt. All the three leading ladies of this movie are terrific performers and have the charisma to lift any script. I am sure Kalank will be a pleasant experience

Avengers: Endgame (TBC)

Release Date: 25 April 2019
Starring: Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Brie Larson, Paul Rudd, Mark Ruffalo
Language: English

Do I really need to say anything to convince any of you to go for this one? This conclusion to 22 films of Marvel Cinematic Universe will surely be an epic spectacular. Avengers: Infinity War was one of my few 5 starrer movies and I have seen it many times in cinema and also in three different countries (as I was travelling during this period last year). Everything about the film was perfect from pacing to storyline, from action sequences to focus given to each character. Talents of Russo Brothers and the scope MCU has was evident in every frame. So, I don’t expect anything less here as well. The only thing I wish is for Captain America to have a bit more significance this time-which I believe he will.
