May- Playlist (Movie Suggestions from May releases)

By: Hamza Shafique

May is yet again another an amazing month for cinema goers. The only thing is that there is no Indian or Pakistani film on my May playlist as there is no Pakistani release planned for UAE in May and I have excluded the only Indian release "Sarkar", purely because I don't like Ram Gopal Verma's style of film making. Also with the two big franchise releases, it became almost impossible for me to choose only 4 films for 4 Fridays of May (in line with the 1 film every Friday format of the segment). Some times I wonder that I have designed these segment formats, just to make things hard for my self, anyway here are top 4 movies which I have selected from my origional top 7 picks:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A United Kingdom (PG15)

Release Date: 04 May 2017
Starring: David Oyelowo, Rosamund Pike and Jack Davenport
Language: English

Plot:Based on the true story of Prince Seretse Khama of Botswana (David Oyelowo) who causes an international stir when he marries a white woman from London (Rosamund Pike). Their courtship and subsequent marriage creates turbulence and dissent in both Europe and Africa.

DDR Verdict: I was convinced that this movie will have drama of epic proportions when I saw an African king in tears professing his love for his white European wife, in front of his black African countrymen, in the trailer. I really liked the concept of the film and knowing its based on true story made it even more intriguing. In this one, you can experience racism from another angle, Black against White which I have never seen on silver screen before. Another reason to go for this one is Rosamund Pike, I loved her in Gone Girl and since then was craving for more of her on screen.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2(PG15)

Release Date: 04 May 2017
Starring: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell
Language: English

Plot:Set to the all-new sonic backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 continues the team's adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill's true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes aid as the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand.

DDR Verdict: When you read the name Marvel associated with any film it automatically becomes a must watch. Marvel has cracked the code to entertainment when it comes to translating comic books world to cinema screen world. I expect top notch CGI with Super human action along with logical fast paced plot. Marvel has never disappointed us and I don't see any reason that it will, with this one.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Everything Everything (18TC)

Release Date: 18 May 2017
Starring: Amandla Stenberg, Nick Robinson and Anika Noni Rose
Language: English

Plot:A teenager who's lived a sheltered life because she's allergic to everything, falls for the boy who moves in next door.

DDR Verdict: I simply loved the trailer. I was waiting for a teen romantic drama for a while now. The trailer reminded me of 'The Fault in our Stars'. It is based on the best seller novel of the same name which I haven't read but I expect this movie to be a simple romantic love story of complicated characters with moments of intense coming-of-age drama.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alien: Covenant (18TC)

Release Date: 18 May 2017
Starring: Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup and Danny McBride
Language: English

Plot: Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created, with ALIEN: COVENANT, a new chapter in his groundbreaking Alien franchise. The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world. When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape

DDR Verdict: This film is a sequel to the 2012 film Prometheus, which is part of the Alien prequel series. I am personally not a big fan of Alien franchise and I have only kept it in the playlist as it's a big budget franchise film who no one wants to miss. Prometheus was an average entertainer and my expectations with the film are at the same level as well. If you are not into Alien franchise then you can go for Bollywood film Sarkar or Hollywood's King Arthur, both expected to be equally average entertainers.

If you really want to watch a Hindi/Urdu
movie then SARKAR 3  is releasing in
May aswell.
